We are hiring: Environment artist wanted!

Once again, Frictional Games is hiring and this time we are looking for an environment artist. The employment will first only be a on project basis lasting about 6 - 8 months, but if all goes well it can go be turned into a proper employment.

You will be working for a small team with a big focus on finding new and innovating solutions. We want you who are not afraid to explore uncharted territory and constantly learn new things. Self-discipline and independence are also important traits as all work will be done from home.

First of all you should be able to do both nice texturing and modelling. If you have experience in building levels that is also a big plus. You should be living in Sweden or a time-zone nearby. If not living in Sweden you have to run a company and be able to invoice. You also need to have a fast and stable broadband connection.

If interested send CV and a link to portfolio to: jobs [at] frictionalgames [dot] com.

We are mainly interested in seeing artwork you have done, what projects you have been involved in and your role in them. Do not send any large files to this mail but link to the them instead.

  4. I'm very interested to see what you guys come up with next.

I never really got into Amnesia but I liked some of the ideas behind it and you guys have interesting insight into games, as read through your blog.

  6. Sorry if this comment is inappropriate for the subject of the post, but I couldn't resist. I just looked on your nextfrictionalgame site, and I was extremely surprised to see that your making a sequel to Amnesia, or that's what it appears to be. I thought I'd give my feed back on this.

As someone who loves your games and has been with you sense the beginning, I have to say that this might be an unwise decision for a few reasons. Most people who play games expect sequels to improve what the first game did originally, and from what I heard you want to make this game less horror focused and mix things up a bit. I'm having a hard time seeing any real effective way to extend the story line without changing the essence of the game itself and keeping the experience focused and original, if you know what I mean. I personally am curious to see what you have in store but at the same time I can't see how this could work. I think through the perspective of those who were introduced to your games through Amnesia are going to expect something brutal scary in every regard, because after all, its a sequal. So your instantly causing a situation for yourselves for customer dissatisfaction as well as possible gameplay issues. I understand the importance of innovation and trying to do new things in games, that is the true heart of gaming and I defend that philosophy all the way. But doing it with Amnesia is a really risky decision. Amnesia was extremely horror focused and drifting away from that might not be something your mainstream buyers want, those in which were majority of your Amnesia sales if I am correct. And sense your independent, your money situations are kind of hard to control. Of course your going to have a ton of appeal from those who enjoyed Amnesia, but the question is, is this really a smart choice through a business perspective and game play perspective. Basically, is this something they would really want? I myself am interested in what you come up with, but at the same time I'm seeing that two possible bad things could happen. One is that you create something really awkward that your fans might reject, and something that your mainstream buyers would also reject because it didn't deliver what they expected. It would seem that your changing the formula drastically. I cant see really any effective way to extend the story and make it more exotic and different while basing it off of the original without creating an awkward experience. I can't really imagine the kind of experience your trying to make...usually I can think of ways your games are going to shape up. But here, I honestly have no clue what your doing to do with this. Do you know what I'm trying to say? I'm having a really hard time describing what I'm feeling because the picture I have in my head is just so awkward, *laughs*. I'm really hoping that someone will respond to this because I think this is an important topic in many ways for your fans and what not. You don't have to, but I'd like to see your response to what I'm saying, and if I am even right about the development of your next game. If you have found a neat way to extend the story and game play, then great! But I honestly can't see how you could while saying what you said. I of course am assuming a ton of things, but hey...*laughs*.

    1. They were going to make it less scarier at first and keep the scary atmosphere but it wasn't going to be a sequel to Amnesia, but they changed their minds and made a sequel instead. But if it's going to be less scarier maybe more people will play it.

  9. It would be awesome if you guys did a prequel to Amnesia or something. I love exploring interesting and beautiful and exotic environments. It would be cool to explore the archaeological site in Algeria and see what Alexander's home world is like. Or hell, just shedding more light on the story would be nice.

  10. When are you planning on responding to applicants? :)

  11. We get so many that we do not repsond to everybody. If you have not gotten a response 2 weeks or so after sending the application it, you have not been chosen to be moved further in the recruitment process.

    1. Indeed! But if Amnesia 2 will ONLY be like Dear Esther, it looses a great Deal of what I enjoyed in it! Because I loved the horror. Its what made Amnesia Amnesia.
In Dear Esther I kept thinking "What is the freaking purpose of this?" Not only because you literally only walk through (though beautiful and amazingly athmospheric) landscape and listen to a story that is so complex you don't even reallly understand what they are talking about.
However. Imagine Amnesia horror AND that freaking atmosphere from Dear Esther and you will go through living hell and it will be EVEN WORSE than Amnesia for sure.
And I think that's what fans expect. Something that is going to be even more scary than Amnesia.

By the way to keep the original topic...
I wish I could apply!! I'm studying arts right now, but I have never done Concept Art before or worked for a company like that, besides i'm from Germany and don't run an own company (logically) ... Too bad... My dream is really to be an artist for frictional games one day. :(
Maybe on your next project, I shall apply! >:)
